Fossilization
and corrosion will both make rocks become smaller.
Fossilization
means that the rock either breaks down or decomposes itself, and the bits
and pieces could fall off due to any number of reasons.
Corrosion refers to the
breaking down of the rock surface due to wind or water.
Fossilization is the beginning of corrosion; and corrosion speeds up
fossilization.
This
is how big rocks become small rocks: first, a "jieh
lee" ( small crack )appears, and as it widens it becomes a rock
crack, and when it becomes unstable it falls off, making cliffs, and as
it falls off the hill it turns into independent rocks such as Rock
plates, rock sticks, rock pen, and rock paper . Some
don't make it all the way down the hill, such as the snakefrog
stone; others fall all the way, forming an almost vertical cliff.
Sights like these are easy to spot near Chee Shan Rock: From the East
you look up from 120 steps,
from the west you look to the trails of sunrock,
then to the south you look up from the parking lot, and from the
north you can look up from the track field of Yu
Nong Elementary.
Near
the North gate we see clearly
many holes of various sizes caused by fossilization, forming what is referred
to as the beehive wall;
when larger hole are formed, they're called fossilization windows.
These interesting geological sights are also seen almost everywhere near
Chee Shan Rock,
