Mr.Pan

From the old trail of Chee Shan Rock, near the west gate, one can see on the right hand side a great cliff, and written on it is the huge four letters heavenly hole blessed land by the old gentleman Mr.Pan.

Mr.Pan Yong Ching was born in 1820 and died in 1873.  He was a real gentleman of the local community, and the leader of them.  He was the one who developed education and started the worshipping of the Wen Trung God in the Wen Trung Temple behind the Hway Jee Temple.

After the famous Chuan Drung Civil War, the entire Orchid Street ( now the Shih Lin Old Street ) was completely and utterly ruined by the war.  In addition, there was a big thunderstorm which made restoration even harder.  Fortunately, Mr.Pan had the wisdom and leadership to guide and lead the locals to select a higher place to reconstruct the streets ( centered around what is now the Shih Lin Tsu Cheng Temple ).  

Mr.Pan's greatness did not end there with rebuilding the entire community.  He later led the community in combat and won the famous Chuan Yueh War, which once and for all ended the long battle between the Chuans and the Drungs.  Even today, we still hear the saying "in the north, there's Mr.Pan; in the south, there's Mr.Hsu" ( both are local heroes who saved the day. )
