memory gardenLocated in the left hand corner of Hway Jee Temple is the memory garden.  It is filled with different stones and columns and calligraphy writings collected when the Hway Jee Temple underwent reconstruction.  The temple was built in 1752, and only recently did people start collecting artifacts like these we see in the garden.

There are two odes written in calligraphy:

memories in memory garden"Hway Jee Temple ode" was written in 1845.

"Chee-Shan Ode" was written in 1849.

From these odes we see the histories evolve and change and how the land became public land from private land.

The memory garden underwent reconstruction in 1999, and a "respect the words" booth was added.  It is an ancient Chinese belief and tradition for scholars to respect the written word.  This is also to pay tribute to the person who invented words and enhanced civilization as we know it.  In the modern sense, we should respect the intellectual property of others, so this booth does have its applicable meanings even today.
