memorial of Mr.Six ( by Chen Mayren)Chee Shan Rock is the founding place of education in Taiwan.  During the Japanese reign, the minister of education decided to develop education here, so he hired six Japanese teachers to teach here.  And future generations called them "Mr.Six".

On December 31, Mr.Six wanted to go to Taipei for the New Year celebration the next day, so they walked over to Jien Tun for the ferry.  When they got to Taipei they realized something was wrong and went back to Chee Shan Rock, but unfortunately the war had started and the place was surrounded by enemies and they were murdered.

In 1896 the Japanese memorialized Mr.Six with an ode written in calligraphy, and in 1928 they built a temple to worship them.  After tomb of Mr.Six Japan lost the war, however, their ode had been ruined and ashes remained in Taiwan, and it wasn't until recent years did some parents who knew history help people remember about this past history.  This event took place in 1995, during the centennial celebration of Shih Lin Elementary School.

<<Mr.Shee's interview>>

Q : "Mr.Six" were just six grade school teachers.  Why did they earn such respect from the Japanese government?
A
: They were college professors with a purpose to compile teaching materials.

It wasn't easy to recruit teacher to Taiwan at first, and their accident may have made it even tougher, so they needed to be very careful with their deaths; also, the Japanese respect education to begin with.  In addition the temple not only worshipped Japanese teachers, but Taiwanese educators as well.  ( Mr.Shee's grandfather was a student of Mr.Six's. He taught him Japanese, while Shee's grandfather taught him Taiwanese.
